What the stick and the canopy change

A control stick puts your hand in a more natural position and makes small corrections easier to make small. Students who learn on one tend to fly more precisely early, and the transition to a yoke afterward takes about ten minutes.

The canopy is the other half. No other airframe on this ramp shows you as much of the horizon, and a student with an unobstructed horizon picks up attitude flying faster than one peering around a wing and a door pillar. Every other skill in the syllabus is built on attitude flying.

What it costs you

Two seats and limited baggage. This is not the airplane in which you take three people to lunch, and a student whose goal is family flying will move to the Warrior at some point.

It is also warm under a clear canopy on a Van Nuys ramp in August, which is a real reason to take the early slot rather than a stylistic one.

Where it fits in the sequence

Early, and again during the instrument phase where its handling and visibility make it a good platform for procedure work. The forty-hour floor written into 14 CFR 61.109 is indifferent to which airplane you fly, and there is a reasonable argument for building basic skill in the most honest airframe available.

Better visibility teaches attitude flying faster. That is not a preference, it is a mechanism.

How this airplane is operated

  • Six types, all owned here, all maintained here. When an airplane is due for the 100-hour inspection that 14 CFR 91.409(b) demands of a trainer, it comes off the line and gets one.
  • Instructing staff: eleven. Credentials, without exception: a flight instructor certificate, a commercial certificate or an ATP behind it, and a medical in date.
  • One simulator, and it is a good one: an FAA-approved Redbird MCX, enclosed cockpit, motion base. Booked on its own it costs $189.
  • Weather costs a full-time student roughly ten days a year here. NOAA ASOS records put 355 days above 3,000 ft and 5 sm in the twelve months ending 1 August 2026.
  • The single-engine wet rate inside an enrolled program is $179 an hour. That buys the airplane and the fuel in it; instruction is carried by the program price.
  • Every program price is printed on this store. There are no ranges, no block-rate discounts and no number you have to ask for.
