Why there is no hourly figure on this page

Because an hourly figure would be misleading. This airframe is not sold by the hour and it is not part of the single-engine training rate; it exists in the fleet to serve one program, and the price of that program is published in full at $22,500.

A school that quotes an hourly rate for an airplane it only sells inside a package is quoting a number you cannot actually buy. We would rather publish the number you can.

What the airframe brings

Turbocharging, which matters more at this field than in most of the country — Van Nuys sits at 802 ft and performs like roughly 4,100 ft on a hot September afternoon, and 14 CFR 91.103 makes the performance calculation the pilot in command's duty before every flight.

A glass flight deck, which assembles the information for you. And CAPS, a parachute for the whole airframe, which adds a decision that does not exist in other light singles: at what altitude, in what circumstances, and instead of what. That decision is taught here as a procedure with numbers attached, not mentioned as a feature.

Our position, stated against the more expensive sale

Most students should not learn to fly in this airplane. A panel that pre-digests information builds a weaker instrument scan in a beginner, and that scan has to be rebuilt later at your cost. The $15,900 Comprehensive program in a simpler type produces a better-founded pilot for less money.

The people for whom the Premium program is right are the ones with a type-specific reason: they own an SR22, they intend to, or their next step requires currency in it. If that is you, this is the efficient path and the price is published.

If your reason for wanting this airplane is that it is nicer, buy the cheaper program.

How this airplane is operated

  • The fleet is bought, not borrowed. Six types, one owner, one maintenance program, and an inspection interval set by 14 CFR 91.409(b) because these airplanes teach for hire.
  • The instructing staff numbers eleven. Three credentials are required of every one of them: a flight instructor certificate, an ATP or a commercial certificate behind it, and a medical that has not lapsed.
  • There is an FAA-approved Redbird MCX on site, on a motion base and closed in. A session on its own is $189, and no session has ever been lost to weather.
  • NOAA ASOS records for this field give 355 training days in the year ending 1 August 2026, tested against 3,000 ft and 5 sm with four qualifying daytime hours needed before a day counts.
  • Two airframes carry no hourly rate here by policy: the twin and the turbocharged Cirrus. They are bought as a rating and as a program instead.
  • What you enroll at is what is published. We do not run block rates and we do not negotiate, which is what makes a fixed price mean anything.
