The certificate itself

What is a commercial pilot license?

It is the certificate that removes the compensation bar. A private pilot may fly friends and share expenses; a commercial pilot may be hired. Everything else about the certificate follows from that one legal change.

Start with the restriction it lifts. 14 CFR 61.113 limits what a private pilot may be paid for, and the practical effect is that no amount of skill or hours turns a private certificate into income. 14 CFR 61.133 is the provision that changes it: a commercial pilot may carry persons or property for compensation or hire, and may be paid to act as pilot in command. One clause, and it is the reason this certificate sits where it does in a career plan.

The certificate carries one limitation worth knowing before you start. Under 14 CFR 61.133(b)(1), an applicant who earns a commercial certificate in the airplane category without holding an instrument rating receives it with a limitation printed on the face: no carrying paying passengers at night, and none on any cross-country running beyond 50 nautical miles. A certificate carrying that line is not much use to anybody hiring.

Which settles the order. The instrument rating comes first, not because a syllabus says so but because the alternative is a certificate with a paragraph of prohibitions on the face of it. Ten of the twenty training hours in 61.129(a)(3) are instrument training anyway, so the two pieces of work overlap.

The word most people type is licence. The FAA issues certificates.

Two legal routes

Is there a shorter route than 250 hours?

There is one, it is real, and almost nobody who quotes it has read it. 14 CFR 61.129(i)(3) allows 190 hours — but only for somebody who has finished an approved commercial course run by a training center certificated under part 142. Not part 141. This school does not run one, so our students meet the full 250.

How do you get from nothing to a commercial certificate?

Five phases, in this order, for a reason. Each one is a prerequisite for the next in law or in economics, and swapping two of them is the most expensive mistake available.

A first-class medical examination, before anything else

Commercial privileges rest on a second-class medical at the very least, which is 14 CFR 61.23(a). Take the first-class examination instead, in month one. A disqualifying finding is far cheaper to meet before you have spent anything.

The private pilot certificate

14 CFR 61.123(h) makes this a prerequisite rather than a recommendation: the private certificate has to be in your pocket first. Its floor is 40 logged hours under 61.109(a), though AOPA puts the national figure at 50 to 70. Three programs cover it here, at $10,900, at $15,900 and at $22,500.

Ahead of the commercial certificate, for the reason set out above. $11,700, and it delivers much of the instrument training 61.129(a)(3)(i) asks for later.

The hours between 100 and 250

The long stretch, and the one nobody advertises. You need 100 hours commanding the airplane and 50 of those spent cross-country, and neither total arrives from lessons. It arrives from flying, which is why hour-building gets planned rather than hoped for.

The 20 hours of commercial training, then the checkride

Twenty hours of instruction across the eleven areas of operation listed at 14 CFR 61.127(b)(1), half of it instrument work and half of it flown in an airplane with retracting gear or an advanced panel. Then the knowledge test, then the practical test against the Commercial Pilot — Airplane Airman Certification Standards.

Reading 61.129 properly

What does 14 CFR 61.129(a) actually require?

Four numbered paragraphs, and they are not four ways of saying 250. They are four separate accounting buckets, and hours can satisfy more than one of them at once.

The four buckets

The section opens at 250 hours logged as a pilot, then subdivides. Paragraph (a)(1) asks for 100 powered-aircraft hours with half of them in airplanes. Paragraph (a)(2) asks for 100 hours in command: 50 airplane hours inside that figure, plus 50 spent cross-country, at least 10 of which have to be airplane time.

People read that as 250 plus 100 plus 100 and panic. It is not additive. One cross-country logged in command in an airplane feeds four of those figures at once. What the structure really says is that you cannot reach 250 in the right seat, and you cannot reach it in the pattern.

The 20 hours of training, item by item

Paragraph (a)(3) is the part a school actually sells you: twenty hours across the 61.127(b)(1) areas of operation, broken into five named pieces.

The complex or technically advanced ten hours is the piece that catches people out. 61.129(j) sets the bar for a technically advanced airplane: an electronic primary flight display carrying airspeed, turn coordination, attitude, heading, altitude and vertical speed; an electronic multifunction display with a GPS moving map showing the aircraft; a two-axis autopilot tied into navigation and heading guidance; and both displays visible without interruption. A complex airplane, at 14 CFR 61.1, is one with gear that retracts, flaps, and a propeller whose pitch the pilot sets. The Piper Arrow II answers that here; the Cirrus SR22 Turbo answers the technically advanced version.

The ten hours you fly alone, and the long one

Paragraph (a)(4) wants ten hours flown solo in a single, or ten in which you do the commander’s job with an authorized instructor sitting beside you. Either version also counts toward the (a)(2) total.

Inside those ten hours sits the flight everybody remembers: a cross-country of not less than 300 nautical miles total, landing at a minimum of three points, one of them a straight-line distance of at least 250 nautical miles from where you started. Plus five night hours under visual rules, with ten departures and ten landings, each one preceded by a lap of the pattern, at a field whose tower is open. Van Nuys has one, which removes a logistics problem that other fields hand their students.

What this school will not tell you

We will not tell you the commercial certificate is hard to fly. The tolerances are narrower and the maneuvers are demanding, but somebody arriving at 250 hours has flown a great deal and it shows. The real difficulty is the long middle: mostly self-directed, largely unglamorous, entirely yours to plan.

We publish no pass rate and no graduate count. This business is new. Inventing a figure would be a worse answer than saying so.

What people ask about the commercial pilot license

250 hours logged, from 14 CFR 61.129(a), for the airplane single-engine rating. Inside it: 100 powered-aircraft hours with half in airplanes, 100 hours in command, and 50 cross-country hours in command of which 10 have to be airplane time. Those buckets overlap, so a single flight can feed several at once.

Not to be issued one, but you want it. 14 CFR 61.133(b)(1) stamps a limitation onto a commercial certificate earned without one: paying passengers may not be carried at night, nor on a cross-country running past 50 nautical miles. Ten of the twenty commercial training hours are instrument training regardless, so the work overlaps.

18, at 14 CFR 61.123(a). A private pilot certificate issued under part 61 has to be held already, English has to be read, spoken, written and understood, and both tests have to be passed.

250 for anybody reading this. The 190-hour figure lives in 14 CFR 61.129(i)(3) and it reaches only somebody who has completed an approved commercial course at a part 142 training center. It is routinely misattributed to part 141, which is a different rule and does not say that.

At least a second class, per 14 CFR 61.23(a), to exercise commercial privileges. Second-class privileges run to the end of the 12th month after the month of examination. If an airline is the eventual goal, take the first-class examination from the start so you learn early whether the plan is available to you.

A flight of not less than 300 nautical miles total distance with landings at a minimum of three points, one of which lies at least 250 nautical miles in a straight line from the departure point. It sits inside the ten hours of solo or instructor-supervised pilot in command time required by 14 CFR 61.129(a)(4).

The Piper Arrow II for the complex ten hours and the Cirrus SR22 Turbo for the technically advanced route. At 14 CFR 61.1 a complex airplane is one with retracting gear, flaps and a propeller of controllable pitch; 61.129(j) lists the displays and the autopilot a technically advanced airplane needs.

The 20 hours of commercial training take weeks. Reaching 250 hours is the long part, and from zero at a full-time tempo the whole route runs roughly twelve to eighteen months. A shorter figure is somebody describing the training and ignoring the hour-building.

Yes, and the field suits the certificate. Van Nuys is Class D with its own tower, underneath the Class B shelf that serves LAX. So the ten night circuits 14 CFR 61.129(a)(4)(ii) wants at a tower-controlled airport get flown at home, not after a repositioning leg.

A flight instructor rating, usually, because it is how the hours between 250 and 1,500 get paid for. 14 CFR 61.183 wants a commercial or ATP certificate and an instrument rating first, which is one more argument for the order above.
