Between a commercial certificate and an airline transport pilot certificate sit roughly twelve hundred hours that no school can sell you. This page is about how those hours are actually accumulated, and which of them are hard to get.

The gap

How do you build flight hours after a commercial certificate?

By being paid to fly rather than paying to fly, and in practice that means instructing. A commercial certificate arrives at roughly 250 hours, per 14 CFR 61.129(a). An airline transport pilot certificate wants 1,500 of them, per 61.159(a). The twelve hundred hours in between are the largest single obstacle in an airline career and no school sells them.

This page exists because the gap is usually skipped. Training pages end at the commercial certificate and airline pages begin at the airline transport pilot certificate, leaving the part that takes two years or so undescribed. It is the part where most people who leave the career leave it.

The core arithmetic is simple and worth internalising. Buying twelve hundred hours at any hourly rate is a sum most people cannot fund. Being paid, however modestly, to fly the same twelve hundred hours turns an unaffordable expense into a low-paid job. That inversion is the entire economics of the general aviation career ladder.

So the practical question is not how to log hours. It is how quickly you can reach a position where somebody else pays for the airplane, and then how to make sure the hours you accumulate there are the right hours rather than merely numerous.

The composition problem

Which hours are actually difficult to get?

Night and cross-country, in that order, and both for the same reason: instructing produces enormous quantities of the hours nobody counts and small quantities of the ones that matter. Total time takes care of itself. Composition does not.

Night hours, and why they close last

14 CFR 61.159(a)(2) wants 100 hours at night, and (a)(5) wants 25 of the 250 pilot-in-command hours to be at night as well. Meanwhile a typical instructing day runs from mid-morning to late afternoon, because that is when students book.

The result is predictable. Instructors reach 1,300 total hours with 55 night hours and then spend an awkward few months manufacturing the rest. The fix costs nothing extra and has to start early: take night students, fly night cross-countries, and treat evening availability as an asset rather than an inconvenience.

Cross-country hours, and what counts

500 hours under 61.159(a)(1), with 100 of them inside the 250 at (a)(5). Local training flights contribute nothing here, and a syllabus is mostly local training flights.

Two things help disproportionately. Teaching the cross-country phases of private and commercial syllabuses puts you on genuinely long flights repeatedly. And the commercial syllabus itself contains a 300 nautical mile cross-country with a 250 nautical mile leg, under 14 CFR 61.129(a)(4), which is a substantial trip every time a student flies it.

The class-of-airplane requirement, which is the expensive one

14 CFR 61.159(a)(3) wants 50 hours inside whichever class of airplane the rating covers. For a multiengine airline transport pilot certificate that means 50 hours in twins, and buying those at the end is the single most expensive way to close any gap in this cluster.

The way it is normally solved is a multiengine instructor rating, because teaching in a twin generates exactly that time while paying rather than charging. It is the strongest practical argument for the MEI and it is rarely the argument people give for it.

The options

What jobs actually build hours?

Three groups of work that appear in real logbooks, ordered by how commonly they are available rather than by how enjoyable they are. Instructing dominates because almost every airport has students, most months of the year.

Flight instructing

The default, and for good reason. It exists at nearly every field, it produces hours steadily, and it teaches you more about flying than any of the ratings before it did.

No hour-building package is sold on this site, and no block of discounted flying is offered to accumulate time. The only hourly rate published anywhere here is $179 wet in a single-engine airplane, available to students already enrolled in a program, covering the airframe and its fuel and not the instructor. Neither the Piper Seminole nor the Cirrus SR22 Turbo carries an hourly figure at all. They are sold inside the $5,100 twin rating and the $22,500 Premium program respectively. There is no rate card for aircraft hire on this site.

Weather, aircraft availability and demand for lessons. Two of those are properties of a field rather than of a person, and both are measurable.

14 CFR 61.195(a) caps it, and most instructors are comfortably below that on an ordinary day. Divide twelve hundred hours by a realistic daily figure and you have a more honest timeline than any brochure will give you.

The honest part

What does building hours actually feel like?

Repetitive, weather-dependent and poorly paid, and it is also where most pilots say they learned to fly properly. Both halves of that are true and the second half only becomes obvious in retrospect.

Expect the first year to be financially thin. Expect months where the weather or the demand cuts your hours in half. Expect to explain the same four things about crosswind landings several hundred times, and to discover somewhere around the two hundredth that you finally understand them yourself.

Also expect the flying to get much better. An instructor watches a very large number of mistakes at close range and develops a sense for where a flight is going wrong several seconds earlier than a pilot who has only ever made their own. That is not a consolation prize; it is the reason the industry is structured this way.

A position, since these pages take one. The people who struggle at this stage are usually the ones who treated it as a queue to be waited out. The ones who do well treat it as a job to be good at, and they are also, not coincidentally, the ones who arrange their night and cross-country hours deliberately rather than hoping.

We publish no figure for what instructing pays, here or anywhere on this site, because we could not source one that was both current and defensible. Ask three working instructors at any busy field. You will get a better answer than a web page can give, and you should get it before you commit rather than after.

What people ask about getting to 1,500

By being paid to fly, which in practice means instructing. A commercial certificate arrives at roughly 250 hours, per 14 CFR 61.129(a), and an airline transport pilot certificate wants 1,500 of them under 61.159(a), leaving about twelve hundred in between. Buying them is unaffordable for most people; earning them is the reason the flight instructor certificate exists as a career step.

Depends on how many hours a week you can be paid to fly and how often the weather allows it. 14 CFR 61.195(a) caps a flight instructor at eight hours of flight training in any twenty-four consecutive hours, and most instructors are well below that on an average day. Two years is a common answer and it varies widely by field and by season.

No, but it is the most widely available. Banner towing, pipeline patrol, aerial survey, glider towing, jump pilot work and traffic reporting all appear in real logbooks. They are more seasonal and more regional, which is why instructing remains the default rather than the only option.

Teaching in twins generates exactly that time while paying, which is the strongest practical case for a multiengine instructor rating.

Only within limits, and only for instrument time. 61.159(a)(4) requires 75 hours of instrument flight time in actual or simulated conditions and places limits on the share a flight simulator or flight training device may supply. Simulators are excellent for skill and poor for total time, and it is worth being clear which problem you are solving.
