The 1500 hour rule
A popular name for something the regulations never call that. What actually exists is 14 CFR 61.159, setting the experience behind an airline transport pilot certificate, together with 14 CFR 121.436, deciding who may occupy a seat at an airline.
What is the 1500 hour rule?
It is shorthand for two separate requirements that people usually merge into one. The first is 14 CFR 61.159(a), which fixes 1,500 hours as the total pilot time behind an airplane-category airline transport pilot certificate. The second is 14 CFR 121.436(b), which bars anybody from taking the second-in-command seat at a part 121 carrier without both an airline transport pilot certificate and a matching type rating.
Put those together and the practical effect is the one everybody describes: you need an airline transport pilot certificate to fly for a scheduled airline, and the certificate needs the hours. But the phrase itself appears nowhere in part 61 or part 121, and pulling the two requirements apart is what makes the rest of this cluster comprehensible.
It also explains why the reductions exist. 14 CFR 61.160 permits a certificate with restricted privileges at 750, 1,000 or 1,250 hours depending on your background, and 14 CFR 61.153(a) lowers the age for that route from 23 to 21. Those are real, they are used constantly, and they are the reason the popular framing of a flat 1,500-hour wall is wrong.
And there is a third number nobody mentions, which arrives after the first job. Under 14 CFR 121.436(a)(3), serving as pilot in command in part 121 operations requires 1,000 hours in the listed roles, most commonly as second in command under that same part. The 1,500 gets you into the right seat. It does not get you into the left one.
What has to be in the 1,500 hours?
Five figures, and the total is the least interesting of them. 14 CFR 61.159(a) is where the composition lives, and the sub-requirements are what actually shape a career plan, because they cannot be satisfied by simply flying a lot in one place.
The five components
The headline figure is 1,500 hours of total pilot time. Underneath it, (a)(1) asks for 500 cross-country hours, (a)(2) for 100 hours flown at night, (a)(3) for 50 hours inside whichever class of airplane the rating covers, and (a)(4) for 75 instrument hours flown in real or simulated conditions, with limits on how much a simulator may supply.
Paragraph (a)(5) is the one that trips people. It asks for 250 hours in an airplane as pilot in command, or as second in command performing the duties of pilot in command under the supervision of a pilot in command, or a combination, and inside that 250 it wants 100 hours of cross-country and 25 hours at night.

Why the sub-figures decide the plan and the total does not
Total time accumulates on its own if you fly at all. The composition does not. Night hours and cross-country hours are the two that most often end up short, because instructing produces enormous quantities of daytime local flying and comparatively little of either.
So the practical planning question is not how to reach 1,500. It is how to reach 500 cross-country and 100 night while reaching 1,500, and the answer is to arrange for those hours deliberately from the beginning rather than discovering the shortfall at 1,400.
One thing worth checking early
Paragraph (a)(3) asks for 50 hours inside whichever class of airplane the rating covers. Somebody who has flown 1,500 hours entirely in single-engine airplanes and then wants an airline transport pilot certificate with a multiengine class rating has a 50-hour gap to close in twins, and twin hours are the most expensive hours available.
This is a gap that is cheap to avoid and expensive to fix, which is exactly the kind of thing a plan should catch at hour 200 rather than at hour 1,450.
Who can hold an ATP certificate below 1,500 hours?
Four categories, set out in 14 CFR 61.160, and each produces a certificate with restricted privileges rather than a full one. 14 CFR 61.153(a) drops the minimum age to 21 for this route, against 23 for the unrestricted one.
Military pilots — 750 hours

Two paragraphs land on the same figure. 61.160(c) covers an associate's degree with an aviation major; 61.160(d) covers a bachelor's degree holder with fewer aviation credit hours than paragraph (b) requires.

What does 1,500 hours actually let you do?
Sit in the right seat, and only after the airline transport pilot certificate is issued and a type rating is added. 14 CFR 121.436(b) wants an airline transport pilot certificate, plus a matching aircraft type rating, before anybody serves as second in command, and it says specifically that a second-in-command type rating obtained under 61.55 does not satisfy it.
The left seat is a separate matter entirely, and this is the piece that career planning most often omits. 14 CFR 121.436(a) permits somebody to act as pilot in command only where they hold an airline transport pilot certificate not subject to the limitations in 14 CFR 61.167, hold an appropriate type rating, and have 1,000 hours behind them in the roles the paragraph lists, most often the second-in-command seat under that same part.
Read the first of those three carefully. A certificate carrying the 61.167 limitation is a restricted-privileges certificate, and 61.167(b) says a holder who has not met both the age requirement at 61.153(a)(1) and the experience at 61.159 may not act as pilot in command in part 121 operations, nor serve as second in command in flag or supplemental part 121 operations requiring three or more pilots.
So the honest career sequence is longer than the popular one. Reach the hours. Get the certificate. Get hired into the right seat. Fly another 1,000 hours there. Then the left seat becomes available. Anybody describing 1,500 hours as the finish line has stopped reading at the first requirement.
There is also a knowledge-test prerequisite that catches people out. 14 CFR 61.156 requires an airline transport pilot certification training program before the airplane multiengine knowledge test: 30 hours of academic instruction plus 10 hours in a flight simulation training device, of which at least 6 must be in a Level C or higher full flight simulator representing a multiengine turbine airplane with a maximum takeoff weight of 40,000 pounds or more. We do not run one, and this site says so rather than implying otherwise.
What does the route to 1,500 hours cost?
Roughly $89,000 to reach a commercial certificate with a flight instructor rating, and then the remaining hours are earned rather than bought. That inversion is the whole economics of an airline career and it is why the instructor rating matters more than its price suggests.

What makes 1,500 hours reachable rather than theoretical?
Aircraft that are available, weather that permits flying, and an instructor rating that turns flying from an expense into an income. Each of those is measurable.
Training days a year measured at this field

Each carries a commercial certificate or an ATP, a flight instructor certificate above that, and a medical in date. An instructing job here is advertised and filled like any other, and no position is promised to anybody who trains here.

14 CFR 61.195(a) caps it. It is the most useful single number for estimating how long the climb from 300 hours to 1,500 actually takes, and it is a ceiling that most instructors do not reach.

Cross-country and night. Instructing generates large amounts of daytime local flying and relatively little of either, so a pilot can arrive near 1,500 total hours with 350 cross-country and 60 night. Both are fixable and both are much cheaper to accumulate deliberately from the start than to catch up at the end.

Depends almost entirely on how many hours a week you can fly and be paid for. 14 CFR 61.195(a) caps a flight instructor at eight hours of flight training in any twenty-four consecutive hours, and a busy instructor is well under that on an average day. Weather matters as much as demand, which is why the number of flyable days at a field is a career variable rather than a comfort one.
No, but it is the only one that is widely available and pays anything. Banner towing, pipeline patrol, aerial survey, glider towing and traffic reporting all exist and all appear in real logbooks. Instructing dominates because it is the job that most airports have, most months of the year.
Some instrument time does. 14 CFR 61.159(a)(4) requires 75 hours of instrument flight time in actual or simulated conditions and puts limits on how much of it a flight simulator or a flight training device may supply. Those limits are specific and depend on the device, so the answer for any given machine comes from its approval rather than from a general rule.
14 CFR 61.156 requires an airline transport pilot certification training program before the airplane multiengine knowledge test: 30 hours of academic instruction plus 10 hours in a flight simulation training device, at least 6 of them in a Level C or higher full flight simulator representing a multiengine turbine airplane of 40,000 pounds maximum takeoff weight or more. We run no such program and hold no such simulator. Saying so beats letting the omission be assumed.

The climb to 1,500 begins with a single logged hour, and it is worth starting it deliberately rather than casually. Book an hour of dual instruction, keep the logbook properly from the first entry, and enrolling inside a day takes the fee off the program.

You fly it from the left seat with an instructor beside you, they write down what they saw, and you get an honest read on whether the plan is realistic. It is loggable, and it is credited in full against enrolment if you enroll within 24 hours.
