How the seats work
An airplane has one set of controls in front of the left seat and one in front of the right, and the right seat belongs to the instructor. That puts your companion behind you. They can see, hear the radio calls on a headset, and talk to you both, and they cannot fly.
Decide before you arrive which of you is the student. Switching mid-flight is not a thing that happens; it costs the landing and takeoff sequence that the swap would require, and it halves both people's lesson.
Why the second seat is worth paying for anyway
The person funding a flight training program is frequently not the person flying it. Partners and parents who have been in the airplane ask better questions afterward and worry about different things than the ones they worried about before.
This is the flight to book when the decision is a household decision rather than an individual one.
What the flying half covers
Preflight walkaround, ground briefing, taxi and radio inside Class D airspace that sits directly below the Los Angeles Class B, then climb, level-off, turns and slow flight with your hands on the controls. Takeoff and landing are flown by your instructor. The debrief afterward is written, short and specific.
Book this one when two people need convincing and only one of them will be flying.
What we can prove on day one
- Six types, all owned here, all maintained here. When an airplane is due for the 100-hour inspection that 14 CFR 91.409(b) demands of a trainer, it comes off the line and gets one.
- Instructing staff: eleven. Credentials, without exception: a flight instructor certificate, a commercial certificate or an ATP behind it, and a medical in date.
- One simulator, and it is a good one: an FAA-approved Redbird MCX, enclosed cockpit, motion base. Booked on its own it costs $189.
- Weather costs a full-time student roughly ten days a year here. NOAA ASOS records put 355 days above 3,000 ft and 5 sm in the twelve months ending 1 August 2026.
