Accelerated multi-engine training
Ten to fourteen consecutive days, one airplane, one instructor, and nothing to book at a test centre first. The twin rating is the rating best suited to being flown in one continuous block, and this page explains why.
Accelerated multi-engine training: what does it mean in practice?
Flying the twin every day, or close to it, until the rating is finished — typically ten to fourteen consecutive days from first lesson to practical test. The word describes a schedule, not a discount and not a shortcut, and the standard an examiner applies is identical either way.
Three things make the multi-engine rating unusually suited to this treatment, and only one of them is about us. First, 14 CFR 61.63(c) attaches no training-time floor to an added class rating, so there is no minimum number of hours to accumulate before you are eligible. Second, the extra knowledge test falls away under 61.63(c)(4) once an airplane rating already sits on your certificate at that level, so nothing waits on a test-centre appointment or a score report. Third, the syllabus is short.
Compare that with an instrument rating, where 14 CFR 61.65(d) wants forty hours of instrument time and fifty hours of cross-country flying already logged in command. You cannot compress a requirement that is measured in hours. You can compress a requirement that is measured in competence.
Here is the part most schools leave out. Accelerated training works because engine-out handling is a motor skill, and motor skills decay between sessions. Flying the identification drill on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday builds something that flying it on three consecutive Saturdays does not. That is the real argument for tempo, and it is a training argument rather than a commercial one.
What does an accelerated twin course look like day by day?
A representative schedule, not a promise. Weather, examiner availability and your own progress all move it, and we would rather describe the shape than pretend to a timetable.
Days one and two — systems and the ground
Fuel and crossfeed, electrics, the propeller governor, the feathering mechanism and the accumulator that lets a feathered propeller be brought back. Most of the oral lives here, and doing it first means the flying is not competing with the reading.
Days three and four — the airplane as an airplane
Normal takeoffs, climbs, cruise, circuits and landings on two engines. Shorter than people expect. The handling is not the difficult part of a light twin and pretending otherwise wastes days you will want later.
Days five to nine — failures, repeated
Identify, verify, feather, secure, then the same drill with the failure arriving unannounced. This is the bulk of the course and the part that benefits most from consecutive days. Some of the repetition moves into the Redbird MCX, which is full-motion, fully enclosed and never scrubbed for weather.
Days ten and eleven — V_MC, single-engine approaches, and the instrument tasks
The V_MC demonstration flown high, with at least 3,000 feet of air beneath it. Then approaches on one engine, plus the instrument tasks that stop an Airplane Multiengine VFR Only limitation from being printed on the certificate.
Days twelve to fourteen — rehearsal and test
A mock oral, a full rehearsal flight with an instructor who has not been teaching you, the 61.63(c)(1) endorsement, and the practical test with a designated pilot examiner.
Is accelerated training actually better, or just faster?
Faster, and for this particular rating also better, with one real cost attached. Below are the two tempos set against each other honestly, including the case against the compressed one.

The honest cost of the compressed route
Two weeks of full attention is harder to arrange than it sounds, and a compressed course punishes an interruption more than a spread one does. If you cannot protect the fortnight, the weekend route finishes and the abandoned fortnight does not.

Does accelerated training cost more?
No. $5,100 is the price of the multi-engine add-on regardless of how many weeks you spread it over, because it is priced as a rating rather than as a block of time.

What has to be true for a fortnight course to actually finish in a fortnight?
Four things, none of them slogans. A course that depends on borrowed aircraft, one qualified instructor and forgiving weather is a course that quietly becomes a two-month course.
Training days a year, counted at this field
Taken from NOAA ASOS observations over the year that ended on 1 August 2026. A day was counted only where the ceiling held at 3,000 feet or better, visibility at five statute miles or better, across four qualifying daylight hours. A compressed block lives or dies on that number.

Each of them carries a commercial certificate or an ATP, a flight instructor certificate above that, and a medical that is current. On every flight, the instructor is legally the pilot in command. A fourteen-day course with a single qualified instructor is a fourteen-day course with a single point of failure.

The standard. A designated pilot examiner tests an accelerated candidate against the same Airman Certification Standards as anybody else, and a compressed schedule earns no allowance. If the training has not produced the standard by day fourteen, the answer is more training rather than an earlier test, and we will say so.

Ten to fourteen consecutive days is the usual shape, covering ten to fifteen hours in the airplane plus ground and systems work. No, but instrument-current pilots finish faster, because the twin practical test contains instrument tasks and a working scan removes a whole category of workload. Skipping those tasks can also leave an Airplane Multiengine VFR Only limitation on the certificate, which costs more to remove later than to avoid now.
One or two flights on a flying day, plus ground. More than that is rarely productive, and 14 CFR 61.195(a) caps a flight instructor at eight hours of flight training in any twenty-four consecutive hours, which is a sensible ceiling for the student as well.
The examiner is scheduled around your progress rather than the other way round, and you book and pay them directly. Booking a test date before the training supports it is how a compressed course turns into a failed one, so we do not do it.
An interruption in the middle of it. A fortnight you cannot protect turns into a half-finished block that then needs re-warming anyway, which is worse than having chosen weekends from the start. If the two weeks are not genuinely clear, take the slower route deliberately.
Yes, and the twin phase is the easiest part of it to compress. You fly it from the left seat with an instructor beside you, they write down what they saw, and you get an honest read on whether the plan is realistic.
