What The Number Buys

One Hour, Left Seat, Written Into A Logbook

The first hour of a private pilot syllabus, sold by itself, at $229. The airplane is flown by you. Beside you sits an instructor holding legal command of it, who writes down afterward what they observed.

How The Hour Is Spent

You walk the aircraft with your instructor first and are shown what a preflight inspection is actually checking for. Then a briefing on the ground: what you will do, in what order, and what the instructor will handle.

This field sits in Class D airspace pressed up against the bottom of the Class B that wraps Los Angeles International, so the radio matters from the moment the engine catches. Takeoff and landing are flown by your instructor, since those are the two phases with the thinnest margin at a tower-controlled field sharing its pattern with jets. Everything between them is yours: the climb, the level-off, medium-bank turns, slow flight, and the feel of an airplane that answers a control input a half-second after you make it.

The hour finishes with a debrief. Not congratulations. A short, specific account of which parts went well and which would need work.

Why We Call This An Assessment And Not An Experience

Two people are being evaluated in this hour and only one of them is you. You are finding out whether the physical job of flying an airplane is something you want eighteen more months of. Your instructor is forming a judgment about your workload capacity, your reaction to being corrected, and how quickly you build a picture of where the airplane is.

That judgment is worth having before you spend anything. A candidate who is told honestly at hour one that they will need more time than the brochure suggests is better served than one who is told nothing.

What The Hour Is Worth Once It Is Over

It is loggable. Your instructor signs the entry with their certificate number, and the time sits against the 40-hour minimum that 14 CFR 61.109 sets for a private pilot certificate. Nobody has to repeat it later.

Sign up for a program inside 24 hours and the $229 is deducted from the program price entirely. Leave it later and it is not. That window is deliberately narrow, because it is meant to force a decision rather than to act as a discount.

One hour is enough to tell you whether this is realistic. It is not enough to tell you whether you will finish.

What Sits Behind The Hour

  • Six airframes sit on this ramp and the school owns all six outright. Nothing is brokered in, nothing is on leaseback, and the shop that services them is ours.
  • Eleven on the instructing roster. All of them fly on a commercial certificate or an ATP, all of them teach on a CFI, and none of them instruct on an expired medical.
  • Procedure work happens in the Redbird MCX rather than in an airplane, because it is cheaper and because it can be stopped and rewound. $189 a session standalone.
  • We counted the weather rather than guessing at it: 355 days here cleared 3,000 ft and 5 sm in the year to 1 August 2026, from NOAA ASOS records, and the method is published with its limitations.
  • Published pricing, all of it, with no spreads. A program costs one number and that number is on its page.
Before you spend anything

Fly The Aeroplane Once, Then Decide

The assessment flight is the first hour of the syllabus and a two-way evaluation. You fly it from the left seat with an instructor beside you, they write down what they saw, and you get an honest read on whether the plan is realistic. It is loggable, and it is credited in full against enrolment if you enroll within 24 hours.
