What a two-hour slot covers
Departure, airwork, a leg away from the field with a heading and a landmark to find, and a return with enough time left that you fly the approach rather than watch it. Four objectives in one booking.
For the person in the back it is also the version that answers the question they actually have, which is not whether flying is fun. It is whether the pilot in the left seat looks like someone who can be trusted with this.
The cost conversation this flight starts
Two hours logged is two hours you never buy again. Set against the forty-hour floor written into 14 CFR 61.109, that is five percent, and against what a real student actually flies it is a smaller share than that. It moves the number. It does not move it much.
The full $499 is credited against any program if enrollment happens within 24 hours.
Fuel, weight and the summer air
A four-seat single with three people and full tanks is a heavier airplane than the one in the brochure photograph, and Van Nuys sits at 802 ft with density altitude that behaves like roughly 4,100 ft on a 100°F September afternoon. The published limits are 180 lb per person and 360 lb combined, and 14 CFR 91.103 makes the performance calculation a legal duty rather than a courtesy. Morning slots outperform afternoon ones in late summer, and we will say so when you book.
In September, take the early slot. The airplane climbs better and so does your instructor's mood.
Verifiable, on the first day of trading
- The fleet is bought, not borrowed. Six types, one owner, one maintenance program, and an inspection interval set by 14 CFR 91.409(b) because these airplanes teach for hire.
- The instructing staff numbers eleven. Three credentials are required of every one of them: a flight instructor certificate, an ATP or a commercial certificate behind it, and a medical that has not lapsed.
- There is an FAA-approved Redbird MCX on site, on a motion base and closed in. A session on its own is $189, and no session has ever been lost to weather.
- NOAA ASOS records for this field give 355 training days in the year ending 1 August 2026, tested against 3,000 ft and 5 sm with four qualifying daytime hours needed before a day counts.
- What you enroll at is what is published. We do not run block rates and we do not negotiate, which is what makes a fixed price mean anything.
