Where the extra time goes

Out of the pattern and into a practice area, where a maneuver can be flown, corrected and flown again. The second attempt at slow flight is the one that teaches something; the first is mostly a demonstration you happened to be holding the controls for.

A ninety-minute slot also absorbs a delay. A departure sequence behind two business jets does not eat the whole lesson.

Something to settle before you arrive

The rear seat is a real seat, and it is a warm one in August with the canopy closed on the ramp. If your companion is prone to motion sickness, ninety minutes is the wrong booking for them and the sixty-minute flight is the right one. We would rather say that now than have you find out over the Santa Susanas.

Afterwards

The flying pilot leaves with a signed logbook entry and a written debrief. The passenger leaves with a much more accurate idea of what the next eighteen months of somebody else's life is going to look like.

Motion sickness is the most common reason a longer first flight goes badly. Plan for it.

The standards this school runs to

  • Ownership rather than access: the six airframes belong to the school and are looked after in our own shop, which is why the schedule does not depend on somebody else's asset.
  • Eleven people instruct here. Each carries a CFI, each holds either a commercial certificate or an ATP, and each keeps a medical in date under 14 CFR 61.23.
  • The Redbird MCX here moves and is fully enclosed, which makes it worth using for scan and procedure work. $189 gets you a session of it.
  • 355 days a year clear the minima we train to, 3,000 ft and 5 sm, on NOAA ASOS records for this field. What that measurement does not model — wind, and thin layers the sensor misreads — is published alongside it.
  • The price list is the website. Nothing is quoted privately, nothing is discounted for signing on the day, and no figure appears here as a range.
