Why complex time is a phase and not a preference

Before commanding an airplane whose gear folds away, whose flaps move and whose propeller pitch you set, 14 CFR 61.31(e) wants ground training, flight training and an endorsement written into your logbook. 14 CFR 61.129 wants complex time inside the aeronautical experience for a commercial certificate. Those two rules together are the reason this airframe exists in the fleet.

The workload steps up for real. Gear that has to go somewhere, a propeller control that wants managing, and a checklist with no tolerance for improvising. Most students find the first two hours busy and the third one calm.

What changes about your flying

Speed control becomes a planning problem rather than a reaction. A retractable airplane descends faster and slows down more reluctantly, so the arrival has to be thought about at the top of descent instead of on final. That habit is the actual skill, and it transfers to every faster airplane you fly afterward.

The gear also introduces the single most common expensive mistake in general aviation, which is arriving with it up. The procedures that prevent that are taught here as habits rather than as warnings.

Where it sits in the sequence

After the private certificate and usually alongside or after the instrument rating. Buying complex time before you need it is spending money early for no benefit, and 14 CFR 61.129 is the document that tells you when you need it.

A retractable airplane does not fly faster. It just gives you less time to think.
