Why two hours changes the argument
A turbocharged single carrying three people somewhere is a transport aircraft. Flown for an hour around a practice area it is an expensive trainer. This booking is the one that shows you the first version, and that is the version worth deciding on.
Expect the workload to arrive on the way home rather than on the way out. Descent, arrival and a busy Class D pattern with a fast airplane and a tired pilot is where the demands land, and having an instructor beside you the first time that happens is the whole value of doing it under instruction.
The honest cost comparison
This is the most expensive discovery booking we sell. If the reason for it is the occasion rather than the airplane, the two-hour single-engine flight at $399 gives the person flying the same logged time for less money. Say so and we will book that instead.
If the reason is that you are seriously considering the $22,500 Premium program, this is the correct expenditure.
Planning around the heat
Van Nuys is 802 ft and performs like roughly 4,100 ft on a hot September afternoon. Three adults, full fuel and a summer afternoon is the combination that most reduces climb performance, and 14 CFR 91.103 puts that calculation on the pilot in command before the flight, not after it.
If you want the occasion, book the single. If you want the airplane, book this.
Standards, stated so you can check them
- Six airframes sit on this ramp and the school owns all six outright. Nothing is brokered in, nothing is on leaseback, and the shop that services them is ours.
- Eleven on the instructing roster. All of them fly on a commercial certificate or an ATP, all of them teach on a CFI, and none of them instruct on an expired medical.
- Procedure work happens in the Redbird MCX rather than in an airplane, because it is cheaper and because it can be stopped and rewound. $189 a session standalone.
- We counted the weather rather than guessing at it: 355 days here cleared 3,000 ft and 5 sm in the year to 1 August 2026, from NOAA ASOS records, and the method is published with its limitations.
